Film restoration/recovery italodisco 08/27/2019 (Tue) 04:25:11 No.43
Recently started to dig up some "forgotten" films that need love in order to restore or redistribute them. Let me know if you want me to look up a specific film you're interested in, right now we just finished a second try restoration for Madness by Cesare Rau https://youtube.com/watch?v=PI_wY7EUU_M and next we want to move onto Cerco de Terror and Appuntamento a Dallas. (The first edition of Madness had a bit of color correction problems, it was too fucking dark at times)

On 8chan someone requested Gillo Pontecorvo's La Grande Strada Azzurra, so we're currently working on that too.
Wow, you finished working on this pretty fast. Groovy music on the opening scene. I saved the youtube autogenerated subs. They're kind of messy, but the timings could be helpful in creating English subs. Waiting for the site admin to allow .srt so I can post them.
>>44
Thanks man, dont worry about it. I'm working the subtitles right now, I'm about twenty minutes into the first edition, once those are done i'll just transfer them https://youtube.com/watch?v=Rw-p5cI3_lw

Left the first draft up because I might work on the second one a bit more
>>45
>I'm working the subtitles right now
very proactive
If you can find the ultra rare stuff there was a thread from the old board called Lost and Unobtainable Films
https://web.archive.org/web/20190801221123/https://8ch.net/film/res/2402.html
>>47
thanks for the link. I wonder where everyone went, I have a few lost films too
>>48

Really, which ones?

Recently I've been talking with the editor from Nocturno magazine and he asked me about an Alberto Lattuada film called L'Imprevisto starring Tomas Milian. Its lost apparently because he owns the only known copy, and its a tv rip. He saw it in a couple of festivals as well but no luck finding the film. Great polish poster tho
>>49
Then there's a couple of Italian films which I'm not very familiar with, one is called Paint your Policeman Yellow https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205871/ which has very little info
and theres Questa libertà di avere... le ali bagnate https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067646/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1
>>51
It sounds like you're a real deal film collector. And by the way, did you say that you were looking for Deseos? I remember it was mentioned on the old board.
>>43
Is this Andrew Ruse from MDE fame? Why are you getting into film restoration?
>>43
Do you know anything about either of these films? The soundtracks are well-known by collectors (both recently re-issued) but the films are nowhere to be found.

ZOO FOLLE (1974)
Not on imdb!
<The score was composed for an Italian TV movie in 1974 directed by Riccardo Fellini (brother of the most well-known Federico), originally released on Ricordi Label in the same year. Featuring Edda Dell’Orso and some of the best Italian session-men leader in the soundtracks and library landscape such as Maurizio Majorana and Antonello Vannucchi (from I MARC 4), Nino Rapicavoli on flute and Giuliano Sorgini himself to organ, keyboards, piano, drums and percussion.

A PUGNI NUDI (1974)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071092/
<A young man comes out of a reform school properly reformed, but life outside will bring him to the underworld again. His second reform will be short-lived.
>>157
I'll ask some collectors to see if they have them, but there was a weird fall in online presence from italian collectors, dont know why. Most of them went rogue or their websites expired. Maybe its the economy, there is only one or two in my town.

Whats with the J&B tag lol?

Interesting. I remember visiting an Italian trading site a few years ago but I can't remember the URL. I'm surprised the collecting community is active at all because a lot of trading has been replaced by torrenting.
There are a number of Italian collectors on cinemageddon. That site has plenty of rarities, but most of the films you have mentioned are not there.

Oh, and J&B seemed appropriate since it's in so many Italian movies
>>160
I like the way you think lol, I work with an american writer and he always tells me that we should feature J&B to follow the trend.
I've been trying to get into cinemageddon but I just gave up, I guess I'll put my time and money on finding actual film prints here in Italy.

Yeah cinemageddon is difficult to join. The mods briefly opened the site to new people in January (it had been closed for 2 years). I had a few invites but I gave them all away. If I ever get more I can send you one.

How do you colour correct these movies? What tools? Anything I need to know? Something like this would be easy enough, right? I can produce something with Photoshop in 5 seconds that looks alright, but that's obviously only for screenshots.
>>256
Also, the start of this movie is like an alternative dimension version of Xavier: Renegade Angel.

I'm curious what OP uses. I've seen people recommend this tool made by a Star Wars fan. But I don't see a public link for it? He says "Please send me a PM, if you’re interested."

I found a download link on page 35. (Windows version)

It's a big install. The required code compiler it downloads is over 1GB. The program takes an eternity to start up and is rather finicky. This is my first result... might need some practice.

I got it working now. I used the two images I posted earlier to create a matching model that I could use for other screenshots. For my first attempt I used one of the few captures from the film that didn't look like crap that I could find.
It's simple to use. Just needs to be used in conjunction with another program that can take the data and apply it to an entire film, I think.
>>262
Yes the skin tone is looking better now. I wonder where that blue tint on the DVD came from?
Open file (1.23 MB 1280x688 d18vf5.png)
>>263
The only release of the film that I know of is that crappy bootleg. The video is covered in scratches and other errors too. I don't know how it got the tint, but there's plenty else wrong with the video so I won't debate it. Fortunately the film has been restored by the Hong Kong Film Archive. The only problem is that it has been restored since at least 2007.
Earlier this year the HKFA released Ann Hui's (who, funnily enough, acts in Love Massacre) film The Secret. HKFA's previous release seems to have come out in 2016, and before that in 2012. So, hopefully they'll come out with another movie in 2023, and maybe it'll be Love Massacre (The Spooky Bunch would also be cool), but it probably won't be.
Another issue is that their release of The Secret doesn't even look good. Yeah, it's better than the previously available VHS rip, but the colours look weird.
Open file (85.55 KB 750x400 love-massacre-a.jpg)
>>264
Oh I see. It might be helpful to find stills from the HKFA restoration to try for the color correction. I couldn't find very many of them, but how about this one?
https://screenhk.wordpress.com/2018/06/02/love-massacre-1981-review/
>>265
That's a promotional shot. So that particular frame doesn't appear in the film. I did try it out with the closest approximate, and the result was reasonably okay, but it looked terrible when I applied the settings for the other stills.
>>266
Too bad, I wasn't sure. Maybe there are no stills to be found. Well, if you ever process the full video let us know.

Great job! I didn't see much of Dre's software but it seems like it works out frame by frame, that's insane but it looks great. I've always wanted to do a frame by frame restoration because like you said Photoshop can greatly enhance a film.
LUT's are fairly easy to use specially if you have a simple video editor.
For a simple digital restoration I usually correct the colours & levels manually, sometimes I find a useful LUT that makes the job somewhat easier but in my opinion if you want to render and clean an entire film using one or various software you'd need dedicated heavy-ish horsepower. Or at least a nearly new, clean PC. I used to work on my brother's Mac laptop and that was a low-end wonder for digital edits. You can always process the film in segments if you don't want to strain a "cheap" PC I guess

This is a quick single frame edit I made for one of my favourite scenes of Madness, (the croc statue) tho I can't remember if the before pic was already enhanced. Just imagine what an actual frame by frame restoration could look like.

I take it you don't have much memory on your PC? I am dying of stress because I am in the same situation, all of my work I've done it in a shitty second hand laptop that will soon die, depression and alcoholism are seriously affecting me.
>>274
My PC is mid-range, I think. 16GBs of RAM, and an AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 6 core processor. Which software do you use? The Dre program can't fix a film by itself since it only outputs images and various data for importing to other software.

Davinci Resolve looks pretty cool. There's a free version with color correction so maybe you don't even have to pirate.
DrDre's program might be a slower method unless you want to match a screencap exactly. But if you are experimenting with colors the Resolve LUT Browser looks like a better option.
<New visual LUT browser makes it faster than ever to find, preview and apply LUTs.

Do you guys know about AviSynth and Vapoursynth? You can do these type of jobs with it. You can apply what you've done to over multiple frames with a simple script.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AviSynth
http://www.vapoursynth.com/about/

AviSynth is older/Windows only but has a simpler syntax. Vapoursynth works on other OSs and changed the syntax so some of the pre-made avisynth scripts still haven't been ported. Both will do what you need. You can find a GUI for avisynth here: https://github.com/gispos/AvsPmod/releases

I've used Avisynth as part of a ripping procedure (with MeGUI and AutoGK before that). But I've never used it for custom scripts. Once I tried to make "Zoetrope" clips but it kept giving me an error.

I found A Pugni Nudi if you're interested
>>368
Ah I see it now, thanks for mentioning it. All this time I assumed it was never posted anywhere but apparently it's been too long since I searched for it.
>>370
No prob, tho I'm very interested in Zoo as well. I used to listen to I Marc 4 and Edda all the time for years, now I transitioned to the master Cipriani since he is the main inspiration for a work in progress
>>370
Hey! I really need your help because I'm an unbelievable dumb fuck and missed the ratio threshold, can you help me contact a CG mod? You got my email right? I'm desperate because I was involved in several projects and it would be a shame to leave them all abandoned
>>380
Are you locked out of your account? Did you buy any upload credit?
>>381
Yeah, can't login, I was advised to seed until the ratio gets fixed but that could take months. I was just worried about the pending projects. I did buy upload

>>513 So it's hard to find. Nature documentaries are probably lower priority to save compared to an actual film. At least we have the music I suppose Nice photo with Sorgini rocking the leather vest + leather pants. His Africa Oscura album is pretty good too, it's a moody contrast to Zoo Folle.
>redistribute I'm looking for an obscure jap film called Avec Mon Mari (1999), as far as i'm concerned its unobtaniable atleast in the US. Also looking for Waiting For The Flood (1990, which in all honesty is likely lost, VHS is out of print https://letterboxd.com/film/waiting-for-the-flood/

I was thinking Cocksucker Blues might be the most famous film that hasn't been restored at all. I doubt it can be restored very well without going to the source. Given its reputation I was prepared to be shocked. Instead I got bored and bailed out halfway through. There's some sex and drugs but plenty of uneventful footage and forgettable (often barely understandable) dialogue. The Stones' star power evaporates as soon as they step off stage and start killing time before the next gig.

<Over the past year, I spent most of my free time restoring (and learning how to restore) this vintage 12 minute exhibitors reel from 1975. Finally finished it and posted it on YouTube. Here is the link to watch as well as more info below. Logan's Run: Selected Scenes '75 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seAFOzrAds8 Logan's Run: Selected Scenes '76 (raw vs. recolor) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3-ScJLFXqk <Created in November 1975, this is the earliest known compilation of footage from MGM's LOGAN'S RUN (released June 1976). Designed to be shown to theater owners and industry professionals, but deemed too slow paced. Instead it was further trimmed down resulting in the quicker paced Selected Scenes '76 (running only 7 minutes long). <Since it was never intended to be seen by paying audiences, quite a few "spoilers" are included. It also contains clips from deleted scenes, as well as alternate camera angles of familiar sequences from the released film. The music is from ICE STATION ZEBRA (1968) because Jerry Goldsmith had not yet finished composing the score for LOGAN'S RUN. <Never issued on any home video format, Selected Scenes '75 is scanned and restored from a badly damaged vintage 35mm film print. Perhaps the only print left in existence.

I'm going to keep trying to convert/stream the film via VLC. I attempted to rip it via Handbrake but I think there's some kind of encryption that messes with it through Handbrake.
