Original Drafts Stormtrooper 12/27/2019 (Fri) 15:05:16 No.1351
Here we can talk about all the funny, nonsensical and outright bad decisions Lucas had made on his drafts of the original six movies and how they were salvaged by people he had hired to unfuck his ideas. The birth and refinement of good ideas and how they came to be added into the movies is also welcome. >Ford famously told George Lucas, concerning the clunky dialogue in "Star Wars," "George, you can type this shit, but you sure as hell can't say it."
>>1351 Context of the mp4?
>>1351 You gonna talk about how ESB was a shitshow because of the retards he hired to direct it before he had to step in, bleed his own personal funds, and finally release the version we all know and love?
>>1361 Episode I postmortem. >>1362 Lucas unfucking other people's fuckups is welcome too.
>>1351 >first draft bad, therefore lucas bad Nigger. That being said, the earlier drafts of films are always pretty interesting to look at. The early ones for episode 4 especially are interesting, as the pulp/film serial influences are incredibly apparent.

gonna b real, I doubt the anti-Lucas narrative that people always seem to buy into. The idea that he's mostly an idiot who just "had dumb luck" with the originals. I don't think his ideas or even his approach to filmmaking (I'm referring to the first edit of Star Wars 1977, that everyone complained about being so slow) are bad at all. Star Wars is a strange beast. The message, and the effect, of the film are so positive, and I think a lot of people mistake cynicism with maturity, and so are afraid to feel as positive as Star Wars makes them feel. People always act like Empire is this amazing film, when it's actually pretty emotionally depressive, where the original Star Wars has this effect of leaving you feeling charged with energy and excitement ... and I personally think that's the mark of the better film. I think people don't know how to handle pure, mature, positivity, and so they try to trash George as some immature nutjob, when he's actually very stable, talented ... offbeat sure, but he's never come across as particularly unreasonable to me. I had a concept art book for Revenge of the Sith and there was this honestly pretty badass concept for this race of Lemur like aliens that were early versions of the Utapau inhabitants.
>>1368 Almost looks like a a brute/jiralhanae from Halo.
>>1351 At least the OT's writing went further then a first draft. I heard somewhere that TLJ never got a second draft and with how awful it is, I can believe it.
>>1368 >The message, and the effect, of the film are so positive, and I think a lot of people mistake cynicism with maturity, and so are afraid to feel as positive as Star Wars makes them feel. Didn't Lucas say something like this when people complained about the prequels?
>>1368 >The idea that he's mostly an idiot who just "had dumb luck" with the originals. There are 2 tiers of discussion here: - Writing the lore of SW - Directing a movie well Lucas handles the lore, he's the father of SW for that. But he can't direct shit.
>>1388 Good digits but wrong. The first version of ESB to pass the directing process was a fucking shitshow because Lucas didn't direct it, he hired someone else to do it for him He sperged out, reshot everything himself, and dumped his personal funds to get the movie to work. He's a mediocre director at worst
https://invidio.us/watch?v=vqnjzVX8EKA Honestly, knowing that George directed all his films like silent movies makes a great many things clearer. In fact, it'd be interesting to see a dialogueless rendition of the Prequels.
>>1374 Really? If you have sauce I'd like to see it. This is a conclusion I came to through lots of discussion and thinking about Star Wars, but I could've seen that a long time ago, and could be repeating it without realizing. t. a lifelong fan
>>1388 >Lucas handles the lore, he's the father of SW for that. But he can't direct shit. Hard disagree. Honestly I think a lot of the criticism, both that "he can't direct" and "his first edit of Star Wars was awful and boring" come from people who fundamentally dislike Star Wars to begin with. I'd honestly like to see Lucas' pure original vision, the slow paced cut of Star Wars that he was working on; before passing that kind of judgement myself. That's something we'll never get to do obviously...
>>1502 If there's one deleted scene I wish was in the movie it would be were luke meets up with Bigs Darklighter on Tattooine. It helps set him up for later so people don't get confused on Yavin IV when Luke talks to some random guy. That and I like their conversation, Bigs has sort of a big brother vibe.
>>1351 Ewoks were the dumbest things Lucas put into the original trilogy.
>>1574 If there was a way to combine that scene with the original radio play, it would make for one amazing and emotional piece of cinema by itself.

So, getting things back on track, I read that Mace Windu was originally going to be the protagonist of A New Hope; an interesting concept, even if he likely would have been nothing like the Mace we know now.
>>1574 Bigs' character was scavenged to make Lando. He would look like a cosplayer.
>>1581 I can't remember any versions that were like that; The draft protags were basically just an "Obi-wan" type character and "Anakin Starkiller" from what i remember. Later drafts are pretty close to final Luke. Protagonists didn't really merge in concept either, Obi-wan was moved to a side character sure; but the "Anakin" character basically split into Luke and Solo.
>>1581 Mace Windi was one of many names created in pre-production, like Starkiller. It wouldn't have been Mace Windu the eventual character.
>>1618 That's what I meant to say, but the idea of Windu surviving RotS and later meeting up with Luke and Obi-Wan on Tatooine sounds like a neat "what if"
>>1576 This the idea the bunch of dwarves could ever fight an army of 6' ubermensch is retarded beyond belief.
>>1581 I don't know anything about that, I know originally that the protag was supposed to be called Starkiller and he was supposed to be an old man and a general.
