Alright, I just got back from Episode IX. Despite knowing all the leaks, I didn't foresee how awful it would actually be on screen. Here's my ranking of all the films in the saga:
V > IV > VI > VIII > III > I > II > VII > IX
Now, I like VIII more than the prequels because the prequels were really poorly directed. I liked the resolution of Luke's story and how it explained how Kylo was beaten and that treating Kylo as a second Darth Vader is ridiculous. I also liked the direction things were taking with Kylo being the new leader. My biggest issues was the cheapening of the First Order by having the Dreadnought being so easily destroyed by a single bomber (I know they lost a lot of ships, but it should've been a more of a battle) and Holdo's evacuation plan/light speed ram, which cemented how utterly incompetent the First Order were. The casino sequence is also pretty terrible, but less offensive than what's already been seen in the prequels.
In saying that VIII is a better film than the prequels, I do not mean it deserves to exist more over the prequels. The prequels expanded the Star Wars universe even more than the Original Trilogy in the best way possible. Their direction is bad enough to the point where I wouldn't want to watch them over the first four in my list, but it provided everything I love about Star Wars.
Finally, for the last two films on my list, it was hard to choose. VII is just boring and resulted in the abhorrent sequel trilogy that shouldn't exist, but I just came back from IX, and it sure as shit could've been resolved better than that pathetic mess. The film is amphetamine. Too much shit happening and none of it made sense. A complete waste of time and not worth breaking down to analyze.
