E-readers/e-ink devices Anonymous 12/18/2019 (Wed) 08:08:40 No.1120
Does anyone have insight into e-readers? It seems like the new Kindle Paperwhite's are the best for your money considering they're water proof. Can I use them without ever connecting them to the internet? Unfortunately all the ebay listings are for older models that suck dick and are barely going for under retail price so it's looking like I'm going to have to give amazon my dosh. Apparently the water proof ones have cellular capabilities, is this a security threat? Is there a "thinkpad" of e-readers that I've somehow missed? The only compelling alternative I've seen are the Nook Glowlight models, but they aren't waterproof.
you can use calibre to transfer ebooks to the kindle.
if you buy them from amazon they're logged into your account from factory, but i'm not sure wether you have to connect it to wifi for the initial setup

botnet
Buy a Kobo device and do this:

Also don't use Calibre. It's bloated.

I'd rather build my own, there are a few projects out there for boards that work with common eink panels. The one in this picture is for a eink calendar.

At first I thought I'd just buy an older ereader and root it but the community for that isn't very active. koreader.rocks

Trying to fix a product that's inherently broken by design seems like the wrong way to approach things. They'll just keep locking it down until it's impossible to modify.

You've got a better solution to Calibre for someone with hundreds of thousands of books in different formats?

I can at least speak for the 2016 kindle. I didn't connect it to any form of network when setting it up and I just leave it on airplane mode permanently. To get books on it, I take a .pdf and run it through calibre before manually transferring the kindle file onto the device via cable. Is it the best method? Who knows, but it works for me and I don't have any problems.

Building your own is interesting, but probably way outside of my skill set. One of my concerns was the repairability of devices like the Kindle and whether or not you could replace the batteries in them once they die. I suspect it's probably not possible, but I should try to find teardowns just in case.

I didn't know about the Kobo brand. It does seem like there's a better second-hand market for them so I might price watch them on ebay for awhile and see if I can get the h2o model. Though that github says the okreader may not be compatible with the h2o models.

I figured you could just avoid connecting to wifi to avoid the botnet, but I've read the water proof models have cellular capabilities which turned me off a little bit since I don't think there's any way to permanently disable that with 100% certainty. I don't think the Kobo e-readers have that so perhaps they're the better choice.
>>1130
>You've got a better solution to Calibre
Just use the filesystem
>>1132 >Kobo ereaders have less botnet Probably right, I got the kindle as a gift so I kind of just went with it. Thinking back I can't remember if I had to sign into anything but those are easy enough to fake.
>>1120 >Is there a "thinkpad" of e-readers that I've somehow missed? Seconding >>1129. Got an older model a while back; Kobos are far easier to de-botnet than other e-readers.
>>1120 I personally mess with Sony’s paper and I think in the long term it would defiantly be worth the price. Though I will not dispute they are expensive if you have the racks to drop on an e reader, no contest

Where do you get cheap eink panels?
get a pocketbook inkpad 3
install koreader
>all modern ereaders have removed or heavilg gimped the addition of sd readers FUCK
>>2586 They want you to buy shit from their store. e-readers suck and e-ink is totally overpriced. >muh white is too bright, the book's background is making my eyes hurt because of sooooooooo much light Just set your colours to white on black. There you go. Now read. Niggers just want to sell you unnecessary shit.
