Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favorite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. I really like the Ridge Racer series. Also Outrun. I generally prefer more arcady driving vidya with exotic locales. I remember playing a lot of Burnout in the 00s too.
man, i remember when NFS underground (1,2) was the hottest shit, even people who didn't play racing games played that

>>2372 I'm not a big Need for Speed guy but I do remember playing Undeground 2. Mainly for the aesthetics that it provided, that was smack in the middle of the whole neon drag racing craze. And it had a notoriously solid OST that everyone listed to https://yewtu.be/watch?v=WUXfnYb2TvI&

This series was the definition of simple, high energy fun. I miss it.
>>2562 These were great, you can always pick them up anytime. The exploding mechanics really made them very addictive, especially in multiplayer.

Have been playing Forza Motorsport for the OG Xbox and in my opinion it holds pretty great, Microsoft placed many chips on that game and it turned out as timeless gold. When i get a new pirate Xbox 360 i will play the shit out of 3, then maybe try 4 again. OG did have varied motor sounds, it's there but the audio mixing makes them hard to differentiate, seems it was made for a surround system rather than normal stereo TVs. Also some unique cars, miss the Tommy Kairas and Veilsides more than i would like to admit. Plus the very rare TVR Typhoon.
>>2989 Yeah till looks pretty good. OGBox was the best place for vroom games.
Is modern vroom vidya pozzed? It shouldn't be high on their priority list so maybe modern racing games are still good?
>>3472 There's not many of them but the common thing is that they are either ultra-simulations with no fun allowed or some gimmick arcade quick cash-grab. Pozzed as in trannies driving or cars with tranny livery i wouldn't say, i think the latter does happen but not the tranny peddling because there's not that many new games. Perhaps Forza Horizon being the only exception in the middle of the game direction but they are the same thing since 2 and the last one is getting peppered with recent bad comments due to the online section being filled with rubberband so people using old lower-class cars get an opportunity against hypercars. Forza as a series is at a low point, it's been 6 years since 7 and in that same amount of time back in the day the devs released Forza 1 to 4 which were the pinnacle, and 7 wasn't pretty good due to using that loot box system.
>>3491 At least anons into boring realistic simulators are still happy in the current year.
>>3492 Happiness is fleeting anon, also why be happy in the current year with the state of things.
>>3495 racing isn't pozzed so
>>3496 For how long? Gonna be honest my only experience with racong games are soytendos mario cart, a lot of fun but not at the same speed of more conventional racing games.
>>3501 *racing
>>3501 If it isn't pozzed by this point they clearly have no interest in it.

Hate hairpins Hate double apexes Hate Laguna Seca Simple as.
>>3828 >Laguna Seca Why?
Open file (97.37 KB 1280x720 maxresdefault.jpg)
>>3830 So i suck at Laguna Seca's very first double turn (double apex as they call it) and the corkscrew because in the former i get rammed/PIT'd all the time and the latter i can't see shit because it's a camera dive and i always enter it wrong or downright go into it at 50km while everyone rams me back or win seconds because they go at it perfectly. Forza 1 on hard is tough as nails when you reach the R class, i drive with a pad and no assists other than auto gears and the line sometimes because i forget the tracks after weeks, still the AI rarely makes mistakes if they are not tailing you and are also very aggressive. Then the AI has all the assists, thus they have anti-lock and brake at full efficiency while i have to soft brake 10 meters before so they get the position or ram me. I now understand Turn 10 invented the Replay feature not because of the noobs but because the AI was made to not play around and will fuck you up in late-game if you are close to them even if you don't touch their cars. I often compete in demolition derby by causing accidents if i want to win stock races in tracks i suck and doing these in R GTS class is hell. Guess i need to get better at Laguna and Bathurst but doing perfect times for 10 or 12 laps straight is a grind, want to cut my nuts when i reach Endurance.

Most people focus on the soundtrack and graphics for understandable reasons, but do any other racing games manage the level of simple yet effective story telling and "cinematography" this one does? >Race results and the number of tries it took you to win change the dialog you get between races >Has an actual plot on top of "you becoming the best racer" >Courses are colorful and perfectly lit for dramatic effect, with moving set pieces like helicopters and airplanes >Replays have the perfect camera angles to always look exciting

>>4816 >>4819 >>5027 I enjoyed Gran Turismo The Movie. In fact I went knowing that I would enjoy it more at the cinema anticipating the stuff happening in it as a comedy than I would at home where I'd have the choice of functionally every movie ever made and have that in the back of my mind watching it - whereas if you go the cinema and (preferably) go in smiling, then it's exclusively the source material's fault or not in terms of coloring how you end up experiencing it, notwithstanding other people who cough & eat popcorn or what not. Orlando Bloom in it does great. Successfully carries some of the most diabolical lines given in a movie about car nerds. "Now Le Mans is a race lasting 24 whole hours.." Big respect for being able to carry it. The blacktor playing the character I will call "Angry Dad" actually had some range, that he could do. The script doesn't afford it. But he gave me the impression he could be given a chance. Ginger spice could GTFO and only improve the movie. The role's probably written bad. Casting didn't help matters though. May as well have changed the script to be about single Dad's clumsy paternalistic love for his son. There are sections that break the suspension of disbelief too much even for a comedy when the characters start mixing "foreign lingo" (sheeeeit fam) with "gamer talk" "they levelled up" etc. I think the kids are supposed to find forrin speak colloquial and gutteral and therefore relatable, but it twinges my English heart a bit whenever there's a butchering of the language like that. Those are insignificant & small moments that must be suffered through. I suppose I better wrap it up since no one wants to read an essay on Gran Turismo The Movie. Go in knowing what you're going to get. Go in with a small number of genuine friends who also know what they too are getting. Then you will ironically or otherwise enjoy the experience, if not (in each of your opinions) the movie proper. I'm glad I went out of respect for brand loyalty instead of buying Autosport/7 ruined by a bunch of incompetent Nipponese sino-Jews no time for ruining the series fuck off

Open file (79.79 KB 219x262 OutrunOnline.jpg)
There was a PS3 online-only, version of Outrun but then they yanked it off the online store due to the Ferrari license expiring. So you can't really buy this anymore. I think I'm gonna try to emulate this on PS3 emulator on my Steam Deck.
>>9897 >>9900 Thanks for the suggestions, wonder if its possible to play online again via DreamPI or other multiplayer revival devices.
>>7370 I have played a chunk of the Ridge Racer games recently. This will always be debateable as to which ones are the best. But the series peaked at: R4 (PS1) 1998 - The visuals maxing out the PS1, aesthetic, and music combined to create pure synergy. Lots of car to collect too. Ridge Racer (PS1) 1993 - The original classic where it started. For some people, the original is still the best pure experience. The first playstation game and a great port of the arcade original at the time. Rave Racer (PS1) 1995 - I didn't play too much of this as this game tends to blur together with a couple other PS1 games. Bright pastel colors make it look almost like Vice City or something. I think this one has like 3 tracks or something. Ridge Racer Revolution (PS1) 1995 - Cool game but too similar to the original Ridge Racer. Not enough tracks. Rage Racer (PS1) 1996 - Interesting game. It has a different mood with dark skies and different tracks. Moodier and edgy. Ridge Racer V (PS2) 2000 - One of the original PS2 launch games. 60 fps for the first time in the series. It was mindblowing considering you are coming from the PS1 games to this experience. Going from PS1 texture-warping 30 fps (which is still pretty on PS1) to everything being rock-solid geometry and smooth 60 fps. The physics might be the best here in the series but that is debatable. Just clean drifting, not too lose and slippery like the later games. Pretty even with the PS2 jaggies. Maybe this is where the series peaked? Classic. Ridge Racer (PSP) 2004 - 60 fps on the PSP. Great racing game. Car physics can feel a bit too slippery like you are surfing around corners sometimes. You can use nitros to boost ahead of the other cars. I wish the cars looked more detailed though as they look like they have a blurry film on them, as if they are missing car texture details. The visuals feel like a mix between PS1 and PS2. Ridge Racer 2 (PSP) 2006 - This game includes all the music and tracks in Ridge Racer 1 on PSP so it supercedes the original. If you can only play one of them, get this one. Great game. Ridge Racer 7 (PS3) 2006 - If you are graphics-whore or just want something fairly clean and modern graphically within the RR series, this is for you. It holds up well thanks to clean design. It's cool. But nowhere near the artistic aesthetic peak of R4.
>>9912 What is the appeal of racing games? I enjoy racing about in some game side levels but I've never entirely gotten the appeal of racing games besides pretending to be intial D.
>>9917 I'm not a car person and I def don't care for NASCAR where people are driving in a circular track 200 times. But there is something appealing about a good racing game. It's fun to drift and slide around corners and go fast. I like the visual aesthetics of some of these games like R4. It can be fun to unlock and collect cars, which makes a game like Gran Turismo almost like an RPG, where you are upgrading your cars and getting new ones. Like fighting games, some racing games tend to push their consoles visually to the max, since they are rendering a limited space of the cars and the track. And if you go beyond the actual car racing games, millions enjoy a game like Mario Kart, Crash Team Racing, or Sonic Racing. So once you inject a bit more personality of the characters into the game, you might enjoy them more. They also make great party games for friends and family.
>>9934 I agree, I used to love racing my car in GTA clones back in the 2000s as well just for shits and giggles. Once upon a time I would race random cpu cars in transformers the game, get mad that they might het ahead of me and destroy them with the weaponry. You actually helped me unearth that memory, thanks anon.
