The reason why MMO's died out is that gamers want something for their money, and most MMO's requires a form of subscription. So, everything in an MMO now. Costs money to change to another server and they aren't really designed well enough for the hardcore tarded mmo nerd or designed enough for newcommers and today's design with hand holding and you having to be something awesome, just doesn't really fit with MMO's.
Also mmo's aren't really great to start experimentation with, now you have the MMO-light that is live service games, like Destiny 1 and 2, and soon Marathon from Bungie.
The only difference between a live-service game and an MMO is that you don't pay for a subscription and that you can finish all of the content, and the shared world and PVP or PVE part of the game is optional for the most part.
you don't have to communicate with anyone, with an MMO you have to make a form of communication to even have a decent form of fun.
So, MMO's lost to their smaller brothers or live games/mmo-light and these games are successful, even when the server costs can be a bit much.
Also, one should not forget that allot of live service games are free to play after awhile.
And, you can play the original champagne if you have the previous disc, or stored the old content
