Arcades Anonymous 02/17/2023 (Fri) 20:41:06 No.683
When's the last time you've been to an arcade, anon?

>>683 Id like to stick something in her coinslot if you catch my drift.
>>684 you'll run out of quarters very fast
I literally haven't been to an arcade in 16-17 years, time fucking flies.
>>687 Arcades have been dead for about that long so you didn't miss much anon. What did you play the last time tho?
>>689 House of the dead, it was an old one too, I got my ass handed to me and tried five times.
>>695 That's a good one, must have been a good arcade.
I keep hearing about barcades, what the fuck is a barcade?
>>683 remember when movie theaters had arcade cabinets in the lobbies?

>>683 I went to one some "game station" some months ago, actually, it was more like a cheap carnivalish place where low class parents take their childrens one time per month, it was filled with generic race simulators and ufo catchers but also it had some cool cabinets like Luigi's mansion Arcade and that new Space Invaders that zoomers loved, but what got my attention was a 100 in 1 bootleg machine, played some retros on it, the classic Dodonpachi, Knights of the Round and Ninja Combat.

>>1161 >cheap carnivalish places where low class parents take their childrens one time per month The last bastions of arcades tbh. >100 in 1 bootleg machine Those are great, you never know what gem you can get in one of those. I once found one with Tekken 3.
So what is anon's favorite cabinet? Mine is pic related.

I miss arcades...
Last time was probably like 6-7 years ago. There is an actual arcade within walking distance of where I live, with real games instead of being a bunch of rigged slot machines in disguise, but there's not much point in going there alone when I could just be emulating the games at home.
>>2034 Anon, arcades are all about the experience, the cabinets, the gimmicks. Not so much the games themselves. Playing arcade games at home is a waste of time outside of mild curiosity. Lucky for you to have a real arcade close by though.
best golden axe is revenge of the death adder and it's still playable only in arcade machine or emulation. I recently emulated it on my old s7 phone and it was *kino*
My favorites arcadya were actually Wave Runner type of games, with the actual water jet cabinet that would rock back and forth. Not something you could ever emulate, needs to be experience.
>>727 Imagine a bar with a DDR machine, a bunch of crane games and other childhood gambling machines, and maybe a poorly calibrated lightgun shooter or two. And you buy a prepaid card to use any of the machines so the establishment gets 20 bucks out of you. The point values for the cards and machines don't translate 1:1 to real money so it's harder for you to calculate in your head how much you're actually spending on a machine. That's a barcade.
>>2210 That's fucking awful. And this shit is popular?
>>2215 I think that it just fills that specific niche of making you look interesting while having a limited to nonexistent barrier of entry. Like basing your personality off of watching a lot of movies, or dance parties before half of the USA became fat fucks.
>>2217 I guess that was the only outlet for arcades once the mallrat culture and general socialization died out. We take it for granted, but the arcade zeitgeist has always teetered on the edge of several very specific circumstances for it to exist the way it did.
would you buy an arcade cabinet?
>>2238 Hypothetically? Yes. Realistically it's a bitch.
>>2238 I dunno, arcades being in an arcade was part of the fun.

Been a long time since I have been to an arcade but they are super comfy. Friend used to have an Original Space Invader cabinet and was nice to be able to able to play as much as you want but as this anon >>2260 pointed out, its still wasn't the same as being in an arcade.
>>2261 Yeah, arcades were, among other things, about variety. Having just 1 cabinet is like owning just 1 video game.
>>2262 >>2262 about variety, yes, and discovering
>>2412 >discovering That's true. You would often walk into an arcade and don't know what you're gonna play/find, the excitement of discovery was a major element of arcadya.

Why the fuck do old people love pinball so much? I want to go to an arcade and play some actual games but arcades in the US are like 70% pinball.
>>3303 In 30 years kids will be asking why are old people coming to arcades to play "video games".
>>3314 nooo
>>3303 were pinballs in arcades during the 80s and 90s?
I miss arcades but i also dont think they could have sustained themselves into modernity even had the current year not happened.
Last Friday. Went to Akihabara to play Taiko
>>3876 u in japan?
>>3877 That's where Akihabara is, isn't it anon?
>>683 I don't think there's any way to revive arcades, so it's lost media at this point to the generations who missed it.

>>3876 My dream just had me in a place in nippon shopping for shit, a couple of cute girls were there but I didn't make any moves in it since I am not a filthy seggs tourist.
>>4475 Take me back anons.
>>4506 ok but there is only one way to get there, hop on in...
>>4511 >mfw retarded meme is almost 10 years old It might actually be 10 years old, I remember when the ps4 was new, not like it was ever truly replaced in a sense.
>>4515 The diminishing returns of console generations hit progressively, when PS3/7th gen came out it already had way less games than before, some series didn't even get an installment. Then PS4/8th gen came out and it had no games to play other than Bloodborne. Now PS5/9th gen is on and it actually has 0 games while PS4 is still fully supported by the devs.
>>4505 What's the context here Anon?
>>4520 This was a protest against Chinese coming into Japan, that guy just ended up being caught in the middle.
>>4529 I suppose I could understand that protest, but why would 'Waito Piggu' be used against Chinese visitors?
>>4530 He's not chinese, anon.
>>4532 Yes, I understand. Thus my question.
>>4534 >Yes, I understand i don't think you do
arcades were so comfy, I wish i had an arcade cabinet
>>4475 Look at all those chads.

How can I find actual arcades? Everything that's actually advertised somewhere is shitty hipster bars with overpriced diluted cocktails and 2 or 3 cabinets at most. Every time I ended up somewhere with actually good games it was by accident. Do I just need to luck out into it?
>>7015 >How can I find actual arcades? You go to japan. There are no "actual arcades" left in the west. You can find actual arcade cabinets here and there, but they are usually in places where you don't want to be in.

the death of arcades as i knew them is something i'm still not able to come to terms with outside of JP, which even then still isn't doing too hot from what i've heard, the best arcades US (and maybe CA or EU? not sure) can scrounge up are comprised of shitty redemption games made to take up your time and provide zero actual fun aside from 'get big tickets', with very few actually enjoyable games made to just be played for fun what happened to all the good shit? the fighting games, the lightgun games, the unique racers, the beat-em-up's, the shmups, the rhythm games, the action puzzlers, hell even in terms of redemption games, the best they can do is 'remake mobile/webgame made for children'. at least back then there was original, actually enjoyable concepts and ideas. colorama, spider stompin, dunk-n-alien, all sorts of shit it just sucks. arcades are a lost cause from what i can tell, and the ones that still exist suck balls and aren't even worth going to, outside of a *very* small few, and even those can have their own niche of issues or maybe i'm just alone on this, who tf knows
