Pre-Goolag YouTube

YouTube was once also part of the old innocent, creative and fun internet when at worst people would make a video in the hopes of it getting viral. But that slowly changed thanks to the Goolag purchase which kept ruining YouTube at small steps and turning it into Cable TV 2.0 and Spotify 2.0 : >forcing people to move to Goolag account to keep their channels and their videos >complying with copyrightniggers as part of the mutual ass-kissing with the government >giving monetary incentives to "content creators" , aka self-important e-celeb faggots, which drawn greedy normalfag scum and later on were removed which in turn force these greedy normalfags to beg for Patreon gibs and get sponsorships to advertise even more shit on youtube >adding ads in the middle of the fucking video as if it was cable tv >letting big cable tv channels having accounts on youtube >removing full albums and songs from non-corporate music channels and reupload them as separate songs by a fucking bots >increasing censorship and removing comments and videos >disorganizing the comments section into a complete messy shitshow >usless redesigning of the site over and over again >changing the 5 star video valuation system to extra faggy like and dislike Let's reminisce of YouTube better days, whether it was a specific channel or video and so on...

Web 1.0 and Web 1.5 Nostalgia General

So, what are some of your favorite memories of the old internet? Can be websites, memes, events or any other aspect of the days of Web 1.0 and 1.5 For a quick reference, here's what I would define as Web 1.0 and Web 1.5 >Web 1.0: Usenet, Geocities and Angelfire, AOL (1991-2001) >Web 1.5: Early YouTube, ED, 4chan in its "wild west" days, MySpace, YTMND, Newgrounds and the peak years of dA and Fanfiction.net (2001-2008) You also had cross-generation stuff like GameFAQs and IMDB which are still around today, although sadly IMDB's infamous message boards are gone

I recently found out about Escargot (https://escargot.log1p.xyz/) which is a MSN Messenger revival project so let's have a thread about other projects to revive old software / games. There's also a really nice one for AIM too. http://iwarg.ddns.net/aim/

Computers Thread

Looks like none of the images in the catalog work. Let's get a fresh thread in here, focused on computers! I don't have pictures at the moment to share, but I got lucky today and picked up a nice big beige computer case. I'm assembling a new personal computer from parts that I got deals on, found in the junk heap, or that I was given by friends. So, I guess it's not really a /retro/ computer, but it will be in a /retro/ case, and I plan to get an adapter which will let me use a 3.5" floppy disk drive in there. The adapter plugs into the floppy pins, and presents a USB interface to the motherboard. That adapter is under $10 USD. In fact, I've seen an adapter card that will do the same but for 5.25" floppy disk drives. So, when I have more money, I should be able to have not only a 3.5" FDD, but a 5.25" FDD in my system, running alongside new solid state drives, Blu-Ray disc drives, and of course a few regular hard drives. It should be pretty fun. Again, no pictures yet but I will share with you guys when I can. For now I'll just post one from my collection. What have you guys been up to?

Modern /retro/ material that actually does it right

Let's have a new thread without a tonne of broken images. Have there been any new forms of /retro/ media (could be movies, games, anime, websites, etc.) that wanted to look old and actually succeeded? There's an artist called BlueTheBone who makes "retro"-styled animations, cheesecake, and porn. Like any modern hack, he overdoses on visual clutter and uses filters that don't actually resemble the time period he's trying to emulate - but despite that, I think his style is consistently decent. If he relied less on computers and filters, then I think he'd be a much better artist, but that goes without saying for most contemporary artists. The really weird things happen when he tries to make modern character designs and media look old, like pic 2. It isn't exactly wrong, but there is something perplexing about viewing characters and series that were developed specifically with modern aesthetics in mind.

PDAs, pagers, old mobile phones, mp3 players. I miss them. They were so less intrusive to privacy.

It sounds really weird, but I'd love it if I could somehow still have a pager as opposed to a cell phone.

90's-2000's toys nostalgia thread

The 2000's were arguably the last decade when children actually played with toys...

What toys did you have? What toys did you want? Share memories from visiting the big toy aisles, etc.

P.S. The size of the pictures does not indicate the importance/quality of the toys besides Action Man vs Max Steel..'cause Action man is better or you can argue otherwise.

Vidya General

>ITT: Vidya of the 90's and 2000's Keep it limited to the scope of this board, so basically Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Generation consoles only for now. For those who don't know what consoles are part of which generation, here's a quick rundown of the time frame we're talking about... >Fourth Generation: SNES, Sega Genesis/Sega CD >Fifth Generation: PS1, N64, Sega Saturn >Sixth Generation: Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, OG Xbox Discussion of games from the Seventh Generation consoles (PS3/Wii/Xbox 360) is allowed as well, but I'd like the thread to mainly focus on the 4th-6th console genererations since the 7th Gen era carried over into the 2010's and a lot of the games from that era onward obviously have far more in common with modern gaming than stuff from the 16-bit consoles or the PS1 and PS2 eras. You can also discuss PC games and handhelds from 1990-2009 in this thread too, as well as arcade games from that time. Any old-school gaming topic is fair game, whether it be the games themselves or old video gaming magazines, even wild rumors from that kid on the playground whose uncle worked at Nintendo...

/retro/-Where the 90's and 2000's Live On

Alright, this is meant to be a successor to /y2k/ on the old 8chan, however I have expanded it to include both the 1990's and the 2000's and NSFW content is allowed, provided it's actually related to the purpose of this board and doesn't violate any of the site's core rules.

1980's Nostalgia General

Alright, I decided to expand the scope of this board a little more and include a containment thread for 80's nostalgia. I mainly created this board to serve as both a successor to the old /y2k/ board, which was my favorite board on 8chan, and also expand the scope to include 90's nostalgia too, but after checking on this board, I noticed someone mentioning 80's nostalgia and I decided I would do something about it. I personally don't care that much for 80's pop culture aside from the music and some of the old edgy anime, but 80's nostalgia did become a thing in the 2000's and I can see why others like the whole 80's style, so I'll allow it as long as it's mainly kept to this thread.

Infinity Cup

Anons,

As that one anon that's been working on the Infinity Cup for all this time, I feel like the boards that were set to participate deserve a bit better than radio silence. For those that aren't caught up or need a quick rundown:
>The Infinity Cup is a virtual soccer(football[divegrass]) tournament, with its roots dating back to the earliest days of 8chan
>It takes place in Pro Evolution Soccer (PES), a virtual soccer franchise from Konami
>I took on the responsibility of organizing the 5th iteration of the Cup back at the beginning of this year
>Over months, I learned how to mod PES to put in each board's respective team and run simulated games between them
>Using pre-existing guides (many not in English) I also learned how to mod the game from an aesthetic and quality of life standpoint, including crowds, referees, stadiums, balls, and even rudimentary player models
>24 boards agreed to participate, and the Cup was scheduled to begin August 9th
>On August 4th/5th, we received word that 8chan was losing its host, the site went down relatively shortly after
>With no site and no functioning central hub, the Cup was postponed.
>I disappear for about a month
>I return in October
>We still don't have a site, but we do have a webring.
>You are here.
The whole point of this is to see if anyone still cares at this point. There was hype for the Cup. Yes, some boards cared much more than others but there 24 willing boards and we had the resources to run the Cup. I put in probably far more work on my own than any sane person should have, so I don't want this all to go to waste. That being said though, if we set a date, gather the required parties, and begin streaming the Cup and 6 people show up, I'd rather just not do it at all. I'm going around posting this on every participant board that's here on the webring and I'll try to get this up on 8kun somehow. In the meantime just post in here so I can get a sense of interest from you.

/retro34/-Hentai and Skinemax Nostalgia

I know this is gonna sound weird, but you ever feel a sense of nostalgia for hentai you enjoyed from back in the day? The 90's and 2000's had some good titles, and I'll include a lot of the 80's titles in this as well since most of them didn't get released in the West until the 90's or early 2000's. IIRC, Legend of the Overfiend came out in 1987 in Japan but did not get a release in the West until 1993. I think the first three parts of the Urotsukidoji OVA was the first hentai release in America ever. Central Park Media took the different OVA installments of Urotsukidoji and edited them into four feature-length movies, the first of which got a limited theatrical release in the 90's. Of course, there were other classics like La Blue Girl, Ogenki Clinic, and Lyon Flare in the 90's and you also had Bible Black back in the early 2000's. While this thread is mainly focused on hentai from the 90's and 2000's (or 80's hentai that was released outside of Japan in the 90's and 2000's) there is another thing I do kind of miss. Remember those softcore skin flicks that used to air on Cinemax and HBO late at night? They were pretty popular back in the 1990's and 2000's and they even lasted into the 2010's before HBO shut them down completely after the AT&T merger. I kind of liked those. Yeah, they may not have been as lewd as the hardcore stuff you find online but there was a certain campy charm about them. I suppose you could also include the old Girls Gone Wild DVD's as well, since they were sort of like a cross between Skinemax and early 2000's reality TV and you used to see the censored informercials for them all the time on Comedy Central and Spike TV late at night back in the 2000's.

90's Bootleg Merch

One thing I loved about the 90's was the overabundance of bootleg merchandise, T-Shirts in particular.

The myriad knock-off shirts with Bart Simpson were so common in the early 90's it even became a meme.

You also had a lot of other common targets of bootlegs such as Sonic, TMNT, Sailor Moon, and as always, the big name rock bands and rappers.

After copyright enforcement got more stringent, you did not see this type of stuff as often, not even at the usual venues like flea markets, gas stations, fairgrounds, and any town with a major tourist trap nearby.

Wild West

I want to go back. When browsing the Web felt like going on an adventure.

What substitutes for "Wild West" these days? All I can think of are Tor, Zeronet, and the vast array of imageboards. Discord can feel pretty wild too sometimes, that is if you can find the right servers.

Post what you know, please.

Y2K was 20 years ago

With a new decade upon us and the 2000's being officially "retro" in the eyes of mainstream pop culture, I'm wondering what 2000's nostalgia will be like in the 2020's? 80's nostalgia got big in the 2000's and is still going strong with all that weird "vaporwave" art that appeared in the early 2010's and stuff like Stranger Things in the late 2010's. More relevant to this board, 1990's nostalgia first became a big thing this decade but it was more prominent on the internet than TV or movies. Now we're seeing 2000's nostalgia start to take root in the very late 2010's. I've noticed a lot of Zoomers posting 2000's nostalgia compilations on YouTube in 2018-2019 and it kind of reminds me of the first big wave of 90's nostalgia that got big online in 2010-2012 or so. Hell, /retro/ itself is simply a newer version of /y2k/ over on the old board, but expanded to also include the 90's. I'm wondering if we'll see more 2000's nostalgia and whether or not the media will start pandering to it. Pic unrelated

Paleo /retro/

Is it just me or was anything related to dinosaurs really fucking huge back in the 90's and very early 2000's? You had the original Jurassic Park trilogy, Walking With Dinosaurs, Dino Crisis, Land Before Time, the Dinosaurs TV show, Disney's Dinosaur movie from 2000, even PBS kiddie shit like Barney. Even the shitty 1998 Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick tried to ape Jurassic Park. Like, this was most obvious with children's media like Land Before Time and Barney, but you even saw it elsewhere in the 90's, like the Toronto Raptors I guess the first Jurassic Park was where it all kicked off, considering how huge that movie was in the early 90's and a lot of the craze fittingly died down with Jurassic Park III, which was the worst of the original films in a lot of people's opinions (including my own)

R: 27 / I: 1 / P: 4

This is copied and pasted from another forum, but, I'd like to start off with it.

Here's a timeline of the beginning of the death of retro internet until now:
2004: DARPA's Lifelog project was "cancelled." Facebook came into being soon after.
2004-2012: NSA picked up DARPA's project under the "Total Informational Awareness" project. https://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/23/opinion/whos-watching-the-nsa-watchers.html
2012: Smith-Mundt Modernization Act gives the U.S. government full legal authority to use propaganda against its own populace. Undoing rules put into place after Operation Mockingbird's discovery and the Church Committee. https://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/23/opinion/whos-watching-the-nsa-watchers.html
2012-2016: Shittons of DARPA/NSA contracts were given to Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc..
2016: Leaked memos dating back to 2016 (found in 2018) of Google's Selfish Ledger project. https://invidio.us/watch?v=LUSZfEBTwRc
2016: Google released a bunch of neural-linguistic machine learning programs in 2016 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Neural_Machine_Translation
2017: deepfake leaks start to become released.
2018: confirmed that for decades now, Reddit/Youtube/etc. vote and view counts are fake and completely manipulated. http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/12/how-much-of-the-internet-is-fake.html

In short, the U.S. government is engaging in an artificial intelligence powered gaslighting of the entire world population.

/end copypasta

I want to fight back against this, and I think the perfect way to do so is to find and collate old retro internet. Make a hand-made giant directory of webrings each with a simple list of sites. No search engines. That way the common user can actually search through their information the way they want and not the way AI wants you to. Just, in general, it feels like retro internet is the perfect way to combat this, maybe.

Old-School Fanfiction

Anybody want to talk about the fanfiction scene of the 1990's and 2000's? That whole era was a big deal for us fanfic spergs. Before the internet, fanfic was very obscure even for nerd stuff. The rise of the internet in the latter half of the 90's is when fanfiction started to take off and diversify. The 2000's was a golden age of fanfiction in my opinion, with the heyday of FFN and things like Deviant Art being seen more as a novelty than a punchline. Even 2000's badfic was sort of legendary. My Immortal and Christian Humber Reloaded are both mid-2000's time capsules in many ways. Anyone from /fanfic/ is more than welcome to head on over here if they want.
